St George & St Wilfrid’s Summer Gathering
St George & St Wilfrid’s Summer Gathering – Sunday 19th May 12noon – 4pm
We warmly invite St George’s and St Wilfrid’s Children’s Liturgy families and all our parishioners to join us at Abbots Wood for our annual summer gathering. Abbots Wood provides the perfect venue for us to assemble and picnic/BBQ together with ample space for socialising, playing games and gentle walks in the woods. It is a chance for parents, children and our whole community to enjoy some fun time together outside of church. Please feel free to invite other families/friends outside of our parish to join in. Please note parking charges apply in the car park and change is not given so have coins. Bring a picnic and refreshments as there is only an ice cream van available on site. Parents are responsible for their children’s safety.
In New York’s Avery Fisher Hall
In New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, on 18 November 1995, the violinist ltzhak Perlman was about to play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Having suffered Polio as a child, it was difficult for him to walk. He crossed the stage painfully, arrived at his seat, left his crutches on the ground, and opened the buckles of his leg supports. He gathered up one foot, and extended the other. He put the violin under his chin and signalled to the conductor that he was ready to begin. Then something happened. One of his violin strings broke. A wave of anguish passed through the hall as everyone thought how difficult it would be for him to leave the stage and repair the instrument. He remained for a few moments with his eyes closed, and then indicated to the conductor that he could begin. He played the concerto on three strings. He had recomposed the fingerwork instantly in his head, the leaps, the combinations, everything, and he played the whole piece as if nothing had happened. After the deafening final ovation, he raised his bow for silence and said, “Now you see, sometimes the task of the artist is to find out how much music we can make with what is left to us.”lt is our task in life to do the same!.
Deacon John Writes
Deacon John Writes:
I know that there are many things in life that cannot be sorted out easily. There are many things that can happen to us, and to our families and friends, that can make our faith and trust in God either disappear from our minds or at best make them very difficult to hold on to. It is well known that some events in life can destroy our faith completely.
Eastertide, the period between Easter and Pentecost, is a good time to remember that the resurrection of Jesus should bring light and joy, hope and happiness, to our hearts and minds. It is also a good time for us to show in our faces something by which people will recognise our faith as our faces become radiant with an Easter smile. We will probably never know just how much good a simple smile can do!
St Wilfrid’s
St Wilfrid’s: Sunday morning after Mass in the Hall was such a happy occasion. The raffle was extended with many more prizes. The final total was £120. Money will be used for items in connection with Children’s Liturgy. I never saw the going of cakes and hot cross buns. It was lovely to see so many parishioners and friends. Sorry the “Sales Table” is a bit of a mess. It will be sorted by next week with many more items for sale.
Children’s Liturgy
Children’s Liturgy: There will not be any Children’s Liturgy this week. Both Teresa and Annette are off on a well deserved break.
Children’s Picture Competition
Children’s Picture Competition: All our winners received Easter Eggs and presents. Thank you to Amelia, Amanda, Varsha and Roisen. It was very interesting to see how the children understood the meaning of the Easter Story, even the sun had a sad face when he saw Jesus crucified!
Thank You
Thank You is a word used many times. This Easter we have come to use it more than ever. Firstly, to our Lord who sent us such beautiful weather, which certainly put a smile on everyone’s face and helped towards good relationships all-round. Secondly, to all the people involved in bringing about a truly meaningful Easter Season. So much preparation goes on behind the scenes in order that we might come to church and enjoy all the special services.
This year we had the help and jovial presence of Fr Kieran, who put an awful lot into arranging our many services. Who can forget his special jokes? Where does he find them? He was of course assisted by our Fr Rory. Please God, he will continue to recover and be back among us doing the job he was made for.
