Foodbank Donations at St George’s

FoodBank Donations at St George’s:   Thank you so much for all your generous donations to the Foodbank, as it makes such a difference to the lives of the families the food and other items go to.  Could we make a further plea for your help, as there is a real need for further tins, of any kind, together with dried goods, such as pasta, rice, cereal and anything with a good shelf life.  Thank you so much for your generosity and practical help, it is very much appreciated.

Songs of Praise, St George’s Church

Songs of Praise, St George’s Church was a delightful occasion. About 70 people from our local churches came to celebrate with songs and praise. A varied palette of hymns had been chosen by members of each church, each touchingly introduced and presented.  After the service tea  was served. And what a tea! Merce and Christian made blackberry jam with berries picked by the Children’s Liturgy; Sandra and the children baked delicious scones which were served with clotted cream and the jam.  There was an abundance of cakes made my our wonderful bakers. It was a delight! Thank you all for your baking, your help with serving our guests and of course, with the washing up! It is your help that make these occasions so successful. With warmest thanks from Anne Bowe and Margaret Piegrome.

Thanks be to God.  We had a wonderful evening in Upperchurch for the launch of my Sister Mary’s book “A Mother’s Love”.  A very good night’s music with appropriately chosen themes and passages from the book:  No speeches, just a recitation or two.  The subtitle to the book is “An Angels Wings”.  The moment captured in the song “I believe in angels, something good in everyone”, is at the heart of this book.   Mary’s testimony to her personal experiences brought home, deep consolation and great inspiration for her to grow in prayer, and to become an active witness to our catholic faith.  She has spoken to us before .  I have got some copies, but for the true readers it is available on Amazon.

Unfortunately, I picked up a dreaded lurgy on the flight back from Ireland. I have a very nasty cold, and even though over the years I have become philosophical, three days brewing, three days here and three days going.   I know it will pass.  But sadly bereavement for us remains a constant.  The death of Ann Winter is our recent sadness and our sympathy goes out to John and her family.  Her funeral will take place at St George’s Church on Friday 27th September  at 2.30pm.

Deacon John Writes

Deacon John Writes:

I hope that the following will give you food for thought, particularly if you are feeling low. The West Wind is really very wise! There is an old fable that says: The West Wind once said to a Birch Tree: “Why are you so sad?” The beautiful Birch replied: “Because I am so useless. I cannot bear fruit like the Cherry and Apple Trees. Even the potato and the dumpy turnip are useful. I shall be of no use until I am cut down, and made into furniture, and sold as a bedroom suite. If only I could bear lovely things like cherries or apples.”

The West Wind laughed, and said: “I have just heard the apple grumbling, the cherry wailing, the potato and the turnip complaining. They all have their complaints. Listen to me while I tell you about love and yourself. There’s a man who works in the city. Nearly every day he walks out here like someone who is carrying a heavy burden. When he reaches the edge of this wood he looks at you, the Birch Tree. He raises his eyes, and just the sight of you fills him with happiness.  He goes back to the city brightened and cheered up. He does this not because of what you do, but because of who you are.” With my love for you all
